11:42am: Recap of Tokyo Orientation
As of now, I've been in Japan for a month. A month of going to orientation after orientation, walking the streets of my inaka town, using my craptastic Japanese, and in general getting used to the dailly holdrums of my inaka life. Went without internet at home for the longest time. I have internet at school, but was too lazy/tired/bummed to post something. A recap of my flight to Japan and Tokyo Orientation: I flew on Northwest Airlines with the rest of the people departing from the Atlanta consulate. The night before was a frenzy of packing and repacking, and of course I forgot something in the process. At check-in, I was 4 and 1 pounds below the limit for my suitcases. The airline staff was letting peple who were 3-5 pounds over go, and if I had known that I would've packed more stuff. Boo... The flight was ok, but Northwest does pale in comparison to JAL. The service was ok, but the food and inflight entertainment could use some work. And of course the airlines lost one of my suitcases. Tokyo Orientation consisted of meetings, meetings, and more meetings. I went to all of them, because I am basically a goody two-shoes. Besides, I' ve been to Tokyo before, so I didn't feel the urge to experience "my last chance at civilization." The meetings were long...and sometimes boring. That plus jet lag made Toyko Orientation one big blur. But the food was good. :) Met a lot of people - all of which I know I will never see again. So why bother socializing? I'm sure there were people, but to be honest, I wasn't in the mood for inane chit-chat. "What's your name? "Which prefecture are you going to?" "Oh, I'm going to..." The 4th day of our stay in Japan, we were all packed off to our respective prefectures. After a 3.5 hour bus ride, we were all dropped off at the International Center in Kofu, Yamanashi. I met my supervisor there...and we began the looong drive to Minobu. He took my to the school, where I met the principal, and afterwards we stopped by a conbini where I grabbed dinner (which consisted of cold noodles). He also got a few English teachers to help me with getting my stuff inside the apartment and setting up some miscellaneous stuff. I was then left alone. I'm pretty sure I spent the rest of the day eating and sleeping. :)

4:49am: Exorcism
In an attempt to exorcise my hyperventilation (and get back to sleep), I'm re-editing and posting a write-up I made of my JET interview at the Japanese consulate. I plan to make this my "Japan" journal, so I figure I should backtrack and get all the relevant info up. Since I got short-listed, it stands to reason my interview didn't turn out a complete disaster.
The following events took place on Feb 20th, 2007:
I had interview on Tuesday. Took the MARTA to the consulate. The directions on their website had me trekking through a min-jungle on the way there. Because I arrived in the delivery area 1st, I ended going up the service elevator with a Chick-fil-a worker. Of course I had to go all the way back down and take the elevator from the main entrance once I figured out my mistake. Attire-wise: I felt under-dressed. I didn't own a dress suit, and recently lost quite a bit of weight (maybe a bit too much weight)... As for the interview itself... The interviewers were very nice. They didn't ask me many questions from the interview question list, the questions mostly came from my SoP and application. Hopefully, I fulfilled the expectations they had of me given my Cornell credentials, double major, and Chinese-speaking background. Or maybe they didn't have any expectations, and it's just my ego speaking. Of course there's the likelihood that I completely blew the interview. I feel I kept the "ummm"s and "like"s to a minimum. I did add hand gestures from time to time, just to convey enthusiasm (actually to hide my nervousness, heh). ;) Most unexpected Q: Demo lesson on basketball terms in Chinese... >_< Q I wished I answered better: my assessment of my Chinese abilities. I put 4s on my app, as I was ranking my Chinese based on native lvls of fluency compared to other ABCs in the U.S. I'm better than 90 % of them, but of course I don't have the fluency of someone growing up in Taiwan. I should've said, "My Chinese is very good compared to other Chinese American speakers, and I've been continuously studying Chinese, but of course my English is better" instead of "My Chinese is worse than my English "and "My Chinese is middle-school level back in Taiwan." *self-flagellation* Sorry for the long post. Felt like letting all the "have-beens" out...

4:01am: Extreme Anxiety
Update: I've been placed in my first choice location - Yamanashi prefecture. My home will be Minobu, a small town with a population of 7000 before it merged with 2 other towns in 2003. As my departure date looms closer and closer, I've been getting more and more antsy. Just a minute ago a full bout of anxiety slammed me. A panic attack, so to say. The result: I'm doubting my ability to handle this move without a hitch. I'm independent by nature, but I've always lived in a comfort zone. Even when I went to Cornell for college, there was always the comforting factor that I was still on the East Coast, that I was in a place not too different from home. I've just come to grips with the realization that I'll be removed from my comfortable environment, my family, and my friends, and be sent to a country where most people's English ability is lower than my rusty Japanese. I've always derived comfort from knowing that almost nothing was incomprehensible (except a CS textbook, oh god) ; however, in 2 months I won't even be able to understand the headlines of a newspaper. This is coming from someone who traipsed through all of Tokyo by herself in high school. Over the years, I've lost the confidence I had when I was 16 - the feeling that no matter where I was things will be ok.

1:07am: Boredom..
Well, not really. But why else would I be posting an entry for the 1st time in a good year? Current situation: 1. Was accepted to the Japan Exchange Teaching Program. Will be going to Japan in the summer to teach English for a year. 2. Monarchy position in an online text-based game called Utopia - more ornery that I ever thought it would be. 3. Getting my stuff organized - or else I won't be ready for Japan.

6:08pm: More Winter Olympics ...
Two things of interest here: 1. Matt Savoie, one of the U.S. representatives in men's figure skating, who finished 7th overall, will be going to Cornell University Law School in the fall. Too bad I'll miss my chance to see him skate at Lynah Rink. ^^ 2. In the NBC late-night Olympics feature, the coverage of the 1500 km cross country skiing caught my eye. Athletes from a myriad of countries such as Thailand, Kenya, and Costa Rica competed, and all of them were able to finish the race.

2:05am: Some Winter Olympics moments
I've been following the Winter Olympics in Torino, and there's been one event so far that has really impressed me. No, it's not anyone's medal winning performance. The event is Joey Cheek donating his gold-medal bonus from the USOC to the Right to Play organization, set up by Johann Olav Koss to give relief to victims in the war-torn region of Darfur, Sudan (an international crisis that the Bush administration should have stepped in, instead of jumping into the Iraq war based on scanty evidence and hardline beliefs). Incredible generosity and selflessness. A true Olympian. Here is the link to the Right to Play site: http://www.righttoplay.com/site/PageServer?pagename=torino_homepageAnd the NBC article: http://www.nbcolympics.com/speedskating/5105526/detail.html

10:15pm: SMAP Merry Christmas screenshots
I spent a lot of time getting some screenshots from SmapxSmap's 12.19.2005 show for my sister, so might as well put it up on my own journal site. "We all SMAPxSMAP...wanna wish everybody...a merry merry Christmas...and a groovy new year!" Notice the incorrect grammar in the first line...yeah, they suck at English.

2:03am: Thoughts on our esteemed President of the United States...
Bsuh on Miers. She'll be a good justice, because "she won't legislate from the bench." And what exactly is wrong with legislating from the bench? For that matter, what happens when you legislate off the bench? Do you do it on the table? She supports pro-life issues, because she donated $150 at a pro-life dinner event back in 1987 (or was it 89?). Okaaay...this is making the news because...? The "Conservative Base" on Bush. He's lost touch with us! He's not acting on the promises he vowed to us, the conservative base, during the last election! We're very disappointed in him right now! Yawn. I wonder if he even cares. Cause heck, at this point, I don't even care anymore.

3:22pm: Intro and first fanfiction
I've finally been inspired to start writing fanfiction. I've started this live-journal in order to air out my thoughts and ideas on fanfiction, or anything else for that matter. Meme was the one who inspired me to write about the kirisaku crack pairing fandom from Prince of Tennis. Her fics are excellent; I highly recommend it. Although this is my first foray into fanfiction, I'm not new to writing. I have a BA in English, although I'm currently a post-grad bum. ^^ I hope to write high quality fics, and appreciate comments and reviews anytime. Title: Familiarity (tentative) Author: yeulih Rating: PG Pairing(s): Kirihara/Sakuno (for now) Chapter: 1 Disclaimer: PoT is copyrighted by other people, not me. ( Familiarity )
